May and June Wrap Up

Hello! I'm back with (another) belated May and June Wrap Up. I hope you've all been staying safe and well during this strange time. The weather has been lovely all week, and today it's rained all morning! Ah well, that's the British summer for you. Anyway, I finished six books in May and two in June - not my best month, if I'm honest.

In my defence, I had booked time off in early June specifically to revise for an exam (which was cancelled as soon my time off had ended) and I felt really unmotivated so I didn't do any reading and instead spent three weeks playing Animal Crossing. Then, my mind did a complete 180 and I've spent the last days of June finishing the two books leftover from May.

Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella

3/5 Stars

The first book that I read in May was Finding Audrey, which my sister recommended to me. It was an enjoyable read, although I felt the romance was unnecessary and I found myself relating more to Audrey's brother, than I did Audrey herself.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

3/5 Stars

The Hazel Wood was an interesting read. It wasn't my favourite, but it was still enjoyable. I don't have particularly strong feelings about it - everything was pretty much 'just fine'. The best part of the story were the fairytales and I think the story would have been better if the tales had been written rather than just mentioned throughout the story. Overall, the premise was great, but the execution rather lacking.

Undercover Princess by Connie Glynn

4/5 Stars

I really enjoyed Undercover Princess. It's fun, it's clever, it's witty. The idea of two girls swapping identities and lives is one seen many times before, but this felt fresh and new. I loved the characters, I loved the plot and I really, really liked Connie's writing style - it was so lovely. I will definitely be reading the sequel!

Harley Quinn, Vol. 1: Hot in the City by Amanda Conner

4/5 Stars

This was a wild ride and I loved it! I'm a huge Marvel/DC fan anyway and I love Harley Quinn, so I knew I would enjoy this going into it. The artwork was stunning - it was so beautiful. I really liked the segment at the beginning where they showed all the different art styles. Overall, this was a fun, quick read and I'm certainly going to read more.

The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village by Joanna Nell

3/5 Stars

The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village was a fun, lighthearted read that I enjoyed. There wasn't much going on plot wise, but there were some funny moments and the characters were great. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for a slice of life type of book.

Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins

3/5 Stars

Her Royal Highness is a fun, cute romance set at a boarding school in Scotland, and although there wasn't much to the plot, I did enjoy it. The pacing was a little off and I think it ended too quickly after the main conflict was resolved, but overall, it was good.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

4/5 Stars

With the Fire on High is an amazing book. I really loved it. It's vibrant, bold and rich. Emoni gripped me from the first chapter; she was an easy character to love and root for. With the Fire on High was compelling, beautifully written and  a novel I would recommend to everyone.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

5/5 Stars

So, I now have a new favourite series/author. I loved Six of Crows - really, really loved it. It was incredible. The writing was so atmospheric and the characters were just *chef's kiss*. I can't wait to pick up the sequel. I'm so excited to find out what happens next!

Overall, May was a good month and June, although started terribly, finished strong. In July, I've decided to reread some old favourites of mine to see if they stand up to the test of time, so fingers crossed, there will be no more slumping. I seriously need to catch up on reviews, but I have a couple of book tags coming out this week, so stay tuned.

My joint favourite books of the month were Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and Undercover Princess by Connie Glynn. My least favourite book was The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. My favourite book cover was With the Fire on High, which was illustrated by Erick Davila

Have you read any of the books mentioned in this post? If you have, let me know in the comments section what you thought of each of them and tell me what your favourite part was.

Have a lovely evening, and I'll see you in the next post.
