April Wrap Up
Hello fellow bookworms! I hope you're all doing well. I can't believe it's May already - the year is going by too quickly for me. In April, I took part in the OWLs Readathon, which is hosted by G from Book Roast. I managed to read seven books this month, quite consistent with my normal reading pattern, but the ratings were much more varied.
Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas
5/5 Stars
Crescent City was the first book I read in April, after being carried over from March. I absolutely loved Crescent City - it was an amazing, thrilling read. This book was everything you could want in an urban fantasy and more; it had me laughing, crying and furious - sometimes all at once. I honestly cannot wait for the sequel to find out what happens next.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
4/5 Stars
Heartstopper is the first graphic novel in a series and it is quite possibly the sweetest book I have ever read. It is the first instalment in Charlie and Nick's story and it is just wonderful. I really, really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to everyone.
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
2/5 Stars
Everything, Everything was a book that I started off enjoying, but the romance and the plot twist at the end really ruined it for me. I really liked Maddie and her strong desire to live her life and see the world, but I felt the romance largely overshadowed the plot. Overall, I didn't really like this novel and I won't be reading it again.
The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young
2/5 Stars
The Girl the Sea Gave Back was, unfortunately, another disappointment. I've already explained my reasons for disliking the novel here, but, to summarise, I thought the plot was lacking and I really didn't like the characters.
Zenith by Sasha Alsberg & Lindsay Cummings
3/5 Stars
I thought that Zenith was a really fun, entertaining novel. I really liked the strong friendship between all the girls and I really liked the different point of views that we got, especially those from Klaren and Valen, as I think they added an extra layer to the story.
A Throne of Swans by Katharine and Elizabeth Corr
3/5 Stars
A Throne of Swans was a fresh take on YA fantasy. I really enjoyed the story; the politics, the twists, the world - it was fun, entertaining and exciting. The writing was a little basic, at times slow and it took me a while to get used to Aderyn's point of view. She's very innocent and naive, so I found myself frustrated at times with her decision making. Overall, it was a good story and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
4/5 Stars
I loved Serpent & Dove. It was a fast paced, enemies to lovers fantasy set in France and it was tremendous. Everything about this book was amazing; the characters, the plot, the villains - especially the magic system. I cannot wait for the sequel, Blood and Honey.
Final Thoughts
Overall, April was a strange reading month. I read a lot of books, but the ratings were so varied. I feel like I'll be able to read a lot more, now that I've finished all my college work and only have an exam to go (unless that is cancelled). I know I keep saying that full reviews of each book will be posted (and they will be) I just need to catch up a bit.
My favourite book of the month was Crescent City by Sarah J Maas and my least favourite book was The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young. My favourite book covers were Crescent City (illustrated by Carlos Quevedo) and Serpent & Dove (designed by Katt Phatt)
Have a lovely evening, and I'll see you in the next post.
Have you read any of the books mentioned in this post? If you have, let me know in the comments section what you thought of each of them and tell me what your favourite part was.
