My First Book Haul of 2020!

Hello! It's been a while. I hope you're all having a great weekend. As you can probably tell from the title, this post is going to be my first book haul of 2020. It's quite a small haul from me (only six books this time), but it's a haul nonetheless. I picked up a few books I've had on my list for a while and I also picked up two books which caught my eye and ultimately I couldn't resist them.

The first book that I picked up was A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer. This is the sequel to A Curse so Dark and Lonely, which I absolutely loved and so was desperate to get my hands on this as soon as I could.

I'm really looking forward to hearing the story from Grey and Lia Mara's (a new character!) points of view; I think it will be really refreshing and will enhance the story line. I'm also excited to see where the story is going; we left Harper, Rhen and Grey with a victory against Karis Luran and the reveal that Grey was the true heir to the throne of Emberfall so it's sure to be a wild ride.

I'm also loving the cover of A Heart so Fierce and Broken; I adore the single white rose and the vividness of the green background. I also really like that they kept the silver iridescent design for the spine, so that even though the covers are different colours, the spines are all the same.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han is another book I've had on my list for a while. I loved the Netflix film (really, really, loved it!) and I was ecstatic when I found out it was based on a book.

This is a strange scenario for me as I'm usually hoping that the movie/TV show lives up to the book - now I'm hoping the book lives up to the movie!

I have a feeling that this is going to be a really joyful, fun, easy going read so I think I'm going to save this for a really dark, grey day.

I did get the version with the Netflix cover - normally I don't like the 'movie' covers, but as I loved the film so much, I don't actually mind this time.

The third book that I picked up based on my list was Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. I have heard so, so many incredible things about this series and it's definitely something that I'm interested in, so I figured now was the time to pick it up.

Children of Blood and Bone is a young adult fantasy inspired by West African mythology and the Yoruba culture and language, which I am so excited to learn more about.

In this book (which is the first in a trilogy), we follow the story of Zélie, who is trying to stop the crown prince from eradicating magic completely. The blurb also mentions Zélie struggling with her own magic and developing feelings for an enemy, so I'm pretty sure this is a story I am going to love.

The cover of Children of Blood and Bone is divine. It's so striking and beautiful - I love the silver streaks. I also love that Zélie really stands out on the cover and her eyes really capture you - they draw you into her story without you reading the description.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo is a young adult contemporary about a girl called Emoni who wants to be a chef, but she's seventeen, she's still at school and she's a mother of a two year old, which isn't an easy situation to juggle.

One of my reading goals is to read more diversely this year and reading With the Fire on High is certainly going to help me achieve this.

I've never read anything by Elizabeth Acevedo and this wasn't on my list but this looks like such a rich, wonderful story and I can't wait to dive right in.

The cover of With the Fire on High is one that instantly caught my eye. It's absolutely gorgeous, with it's bold colours and beautiful illustrations.

The next book I picked up was Deeplight by Frances Hardinge. Again, I have never read anything by this author before but the cover and the description really stood out to me.

Deeplight follows the story of Hark and his best friend Jelt, who are scavengers on the island of Lady's Crave and they dive for relics of the gods which they can sell.

This book gives me such whimsical, fairytale vibes and I think this is going to be such a beautiful story to read.

And now lets talk about the cover. It's so beautiful. There are no words for how stunning I think this cover is. I love the illustrations. I love how it is mostly different shades of blue, but there are pops of bright orange. I did pick up the hardback copy and this one had sprayed edges in the brightest orange I've seen. It's gorgeous. Also when you take the dusk jacket off, there are the illustrations on the inside cover.

The last book that I picked up was the Ravenclaw edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

This book needs no introduction and I did pick it up purely for the cover design, but it's a wonderful continuation of the Harry Potter series and I would wholeheartedly recommend it if you haven't already read it.

The cover is beautiful. I love the illustrations by Levi Pinfold. He has done such as wonderful job with the first three book in the series and this one is no exception.

He's really captured some key moments from the book and captured the spirit of the Ravenclaw house, which I love.

I am a Ravenclaw, and I can never find any merchandise in the style of the Ravenclaw house, so for Bloomsbury to have taken the time to release the first four books so far in the colours of each house, is really appreciated.

And that is the end of my first book haul of 2020! Have you read any of the books that I bought? Let me know what you thought of them or what you've bought recently in the comments below. Thanks for reading and I'll see you in the next post.
